Large Antique Nafana Bedu Ceremonial Shield Mask, Ivory Coast, Early 20th Century

$250.00

A lovely large antique Nafana Bedu ceremonial shield mask. Made in the Ivory Coast early part of the 20th Century.

This piece is striking with it's intriguing shape and graphic painted design. These masks were often used in pairing or cleansing and renewal ceremonies. Those with open horn designs were worn by males while those, like this one, with a closed circular crown were worn by females.

This example measures about 15" wide and 39" tall.

The mask is in very good condition with typical surface wear and soiling of the painted areas. There is a slight crack at the top of the circle (see image) but it the join appears to be stable. There is a catalog number on the back side.
