Early 20th Century Orazio Guasti Terra Cotta and Polychrome Color Arabesque Bust, Signed O. Guasti
This is a rare terra cotta and polychrome color arabesque bust by Italian artist Orazio Guasti. It is undated but likely dates from the late 19th or early 20th Century. The piece is signed O. Guasti.
Mr. Guasti is most famous as a carver and sculptor of fabulous large white marble busts and figures. Marble artists often created clay models for reference and sale. We believe this to be one such model. It is an excellent piece; it has great scale, is expertly rendered, and has wonderful color. It is a very unusual piece.
The work is in good vintage condition. The colors are bright. There is some typical age-related wear and patina and a small chip loss to the front bottom right corner (see last image).
The piece is solid, so quite heavy. It measures about 11"w x 10"d x 18"h.
